    Mayorkun’s “Geng”, other Naija songs with Viral Challenges

    These days making and releasing a song isn’t enough to make it a hit, but if the song comes with a challenge of its own, then the artist has struck Gold.

    It’s uncertain to say what song or how Viral challenges started but credit can be given to Social Apps like Tik Tok and Trillers for popularizing this trend.

    2020 has seen its fair share of viral challenges, especially with coronavirus pandemic forcing everyone to stay indoors.

    Nigerian artists have seemed to buy into the idea of using their song to start a viral challenge. While it’s not every song that can successfully start a challenge, some songs have been able to start one.

     

    Bop Daddy –  Falz ft Ms Banks

    Truthfully, the challenge that goes with the song wasn’t actually started by Falz. In fact, the challenge started with a song called “Don’t Rush” by British rap duo Young T & Bugsey. 

    The challenge involves people showing off their finest wear with their family members or friends was plagiarize by Falz after he used his song to do his version of the challenge and from there, his fans followed suit.

     

    Duduke – Simi

    When Simi first dropped the audio of the song, people loved the song and their only complaint, it was too short. But when she dropped the Music Video, people began to realize the depth of what the song was about.

    The Music Video introduced us to the news that Simi was pregnant a year after she had married her sweetheart, Adekunle Gold.

    Fans of the singer started the challenge which involves padding your stomach to look pregnant or pregnant women caressing their baby bumps while dancing to the song.

    Simi also started another challenge for the song which involves talented fans making covers for the song.

    Geng – Mayorkun

    It’s not often a song can be so successful that it would have fans and popular artists do covers for the song. Well, Geng is one of those few successful songs.

    What started as a freestyle for Mayorkun turned out to be his most successful song. With more than one hundred covers alone, Geng went on to be one of 2020’s biggest hit songs.

    Geng has to be the only song this writer knows that has an EP dedicated to it. That’s how successful the song is.

     

    Mi Casa Su Casa – Korede Bello

    Mavin artiste, Korede Bello is Nigerian’s foremost lover boy. With songs like, “Romantic”, “Do Like That”, Korede Bello is the Nigerian version of John legend.

    However, with the release of Mi Casa Su Casa, we are lured into another dimension of Korede’s romantic side. The side that brings your wall down.

    Ths song was mostly successful on Tik Tok and had its own video which made the challenge easier to do. The prepared is a video of Korede Bello singing the song in one half of the frame while you pretend he is talking to you in the other half.

    Know You – Ladipoe ft Simi

    Ladipoe is a rapper who isn’t widely known as his other rap counterparts. But his Official single for 2020, “Know You” which features sensational singer, Simi has brought him the attention he finally deserves.

    The challenge started by his song is almost the same as Korede Bello’s Mi Casa Su Casa challenge.
