Nigerian rapper Illbliss has issued a public apology following backlash over his recent comments regarding Igbo investments and land ownership in Lagos.

The controversy began after the rapper responded to social media users who criticised his earlier statement about the commercial contributions of Igbos to Lagos’s development, alongside those of other ethnic groups.

His response, however, sparked outrage after he reacted angrily to derogatory remarks directed at the Igbo community, including calls for them to leave Lagos.

In the heat of the exchange, iLLBliss fired back with a statement that many online users described as inflammatory, saying: “We bought all your land and will resell to you.”

Following the backlash, the rapper has now expressed regret over his choice of words, admitting that his reaction was excessive and not reflective of his intentions.

A few days ago i typed a tweet that stated that the igbos had contributed commercially to the incredible growth in Lagos, alongside other tribes. A bunch of derogatory tweets responded in attack asking we should vacate Lagos and return to our erosion filled land. i was upset

and responded rather harshly in these words “ we bought all your land and will resell to you” . i have always been baffled at how hostile certain factions have been towards igbos when it comes to developing areas outside the south east. i apologize if you found my comments brash

    In his apology, he said:

“I apologise if you found my comments brash. It wasn’t intended to tarnish Lagos, a state that has accommodated us all and supported our art, our business and our growth for many years,” he stated.

Illbliss also explained that his reaction was fueled by what he described as repeated hostility towards Igbos whenever conversations about their contributions to development outside the South-East arise. He noted that such exchanges often become emotionally charged, leading to misunderstandings and escalated responses.

Despite the controversy, the rapper emphasised that Lagos remains a shared home for many Nigerians, including members of the Igbo community, and should continue to be treated as such.

“We live here and it’s our home and we will always treat it as such. Thank you and stay blessed,”he added.

The apology follows a wave of reactions on social media platform X, where users debated the implications of his earlier remarks and the broader conversation around ethnicity, land ownership, and unity in Lagos.

As discussions continue online, the incident has once again highlighted the sensitivity of identity and belonging in Nigeria’s public discourse.
