Skales calls Nigerian police out over excessive checkpoints on the road
Nigerian artist Skales has voiced his frustration with the Nigerian police, specifically criticizing the frequent checkpoints on Orchid Road.
On October 28, 2024, Skales shared his views on X, where he expressed anger toward the police for what he sees as an abuse of power and mistreatment of citizens.
He called out the police for allegedly targeting drivers of luxury cars, like Benz vehicles, profiling them, and often resorting to begging for money.
He wrote, “My hate for Nigerian police still stands… very horrible set of humans… police wey no get money go dey stress fellow poor man knowing fully well what they’re doing is wrong… knowing fully well that they are just taking advantage of power given to them.”
Skales highlighted Orchid Road in particular, where he described encountering three to four checkpoints within a short stretch, which he believes are set up mainly to stop and hassle luxury car drivers.
He noted that despite not being involved in any criminal activities, the repetitive stops and questions from the police are becoming unbearable.
He even suggested he may start wearing a camera to document these encounters and share them online, urging the Nigerian police force to review its practices to prevent further mistreatment of civilians.
“Like @NigeriapolicePR… why do you have like all your policemen on orchid road like kilode … they can’t do me shit cos I’m no criminal but it’s that legal to have like 3 to 4 check points just 2 minutes drive away from each other … all they do is stop Benz and ask very stupid questions and when they don’t get wat they want na either insults or begging for money … look into it o cos now I go just dey wear camera for body they post everything online … its super annoying,” he wrote.
