Rising Nigerian Afrobeats artist Mavo is stepping confidently into the spotlight, making a notable appearance on Apple Music’s Africa Now.
He joined host Nandi Madida via FaceTime to reflect on his fast-moving journey and growing influence.

During the conversation, the 22-year-old singer spoke candidly about navigating early success, carving out a distinct artistic identity, and finding his place among Africa’s new wave of Afrobeats talent.
Mavo also touched on working with industry heavyweights Wizkid, Davido, and CKay, describing his rise as one grounded in gratitude, faith, and an unwavering commitment to his craft.
“It’s crazy. I’m overwhelmed, but at the same time I know it’s what I have to do,” Mavo told Apple Music. “I like the drive. I like what I get from what I put in, so I just keep putting it in.”
He went on to explain the inspiration behind his project Kilometer, noting that the title captures the speed and urgency of his ascent.
“Everything was moving so fast,” he said. “So we just said, okay, let’s name it ‘Kilometer’. How many meters can you run? How fast can you run?”
One of the interview’s standout moments came when Mavo discussed his self-created slang and personal “dictionary,” a bold, creative move that highlights his commitment to originality. He revealed that he has built an extensive collection of invented words he calls his “busy lingua,” setting himself apart in an increasingly crowded soundscape.
“I always don’t want to do what everybody’s doing,” he explained. “I had to create my own words. I literally have a dictionary of my own words, and I feel like that’s crazy.”
On collaborating with Afrobeats giants, Mavo remained humble, crediting faith for the opportunities that have come his way.
“God just said take all of these features. Bless the song. Do what you can do for it,” he said.
The singer also hinted at the depth of his unreleased catalogue, revealing that many of his strongest records are still waiting for the right moment. With several projects lined up in the coming months, Mavo promised consistency and momentum, describing the rollout as “back to back.”
In addition, he shared his admiration for South African music and culture, teasing upcoming collaborations with artists from the country. While keeping details under wraps, Mavo confirmed that the songs are already completed and described them as “very serious,” signalling that his cross-continental reach is only just beginning.
