Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj love African culture – Davido
Nigerian music star Davido has shared that American artists Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj have a profound respect for African music and culture.
During a recent interview with Hot 107.9 FM in Atlanta, the Afrobeats sensation revealed how both artists actively embrace and incorporate Afrobeats into their collaborations with him, a shift from traditional Western sounds.
Davido explained that his collaboration with Nicki Minaj on the track ‘If It’s Okay‘ was heavily influenced by Afrobeats, as Minaj specifically requested an authentic African touch.
“My recent collaboration with Nicki Minaj, ‘If It’s Okay,’ has a lot of Afrobeats influence because she wanted full African flavor on it. These days, foreign artists want to do our musical styles, so it is easier for me to work with them,” Davido said.
He also shared a similar experience with Chris Brown during the making of ‘Sensational.’ “When we were recording ‘Sensational’ with Chris Brown, I was trying to make it American, but he insisted I include Afrobeats. He asked me to sing in Pidgin. My dancers were the video vixens in ‘Sensational.’ They even went on tour with Chris Brown. Chris Brown loves African culture, and Nicki does too.”
