Cristiano Ronaldo has finally given his side of the story following his dramatic departure from Portugal’s national team camp, revealing that a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus was behind his decision to leave.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain broke his silence on Tuesday, October 6, explaining what happened during the October international break and why he walked away from the squad before the Denmark fixture.
Ronaldo said he and Jesus had initially agreed on a fitness plan that would see him miss Portugal’s games against Norway and Denmark. However, he claimed everything changed on the day of the Norway match.
According to the forward, an assistant approached him during lunch and told him that Jesus wanted to speak with him. The coach reportedly asked if Ronaldo could play around 30 minutes, and the captain agreed.
He then prepared himself and began warming up from half-time, expecting to be brought into the game. That moment never came.
“Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from halftime onwards, watched the minutes tick by, and wasn’t called on,” Ronaldo said.
For the Portugal captain, that was more than a tactical decision. He believed Jesus had gone back on what they had agreed.
“The manager had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo added.
The situation was later discussed in a meeting involving Jesus and Simão Coutinho, Al Nassr’s sporting director, who had previously been involved in conversations between Ronaldo and the Portugal coach.
Ronaldo claimed they agreed that Jesus would publicly clarify the situation during his next press conference.
He also said an eight-point document was prepared, stating that he had never demanded playing time, had respected the manager’s decisions, and that asking him to warm up without eventually bringing him on was a mistake.
But according to Ronaldo, Jesus’ public comments did not reflect that agreement.
“It was the second time he had broken his word to me. I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises.”
Ronaldo also took responsibility for his own behavior, apologising for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates ahead of the Denmark game.
The Portugal captain admitted that his position meant he had to be held to a higher standard and said he was prepared to accept whatever punishment the Portuguese Football Federation decides to impose.
Despite the controversy, Ronaldo made it clear that he has no intention of walking away from Portugal permanently.
“If I’m physically fit, playing for my club, scoring goals, I hope after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I’ll be available, as I’ve always been until now, to compete and win for our national team.”
Jesus has previously denied that he made the agreement described by Ronaldo. However, following Portugal’s victory over Norway, the coach indicated that the door remains open for the veteran forward to return.
For now, the disagreement between the two men remains unresolved. But Ronaldo’s statement has given supporters his clearest explanation yet of what happened inside the Portugal camp and why he ultimately decided to leave.
