Rema sets record straight on devil worship rumors
Nigerian singer Rema has addressed online rumors suggesting he worships the devil, attributing these claims to the bold visuals and aesthetics in his music videos and performances.
In an interview on the ‘Kids Take Over‘ podcast, Rema called the allegations of devil worship “the craziest thing” he’s ever heard about himself.
He clarified that the imagery and colors in his work are purely artistic choices.
“The craziest thing I’ve seen online about me is that I worship the devil; they say I worship the devil,” Rema said. “Responding to such claims feels like a waste of time.”
He specifically addressed the misunderstanding about his “rabbid phase,” where he used red in his visuals. “If you see a beautiful lady in a red dress, you wouldn’t call her the devil, so why call me the devil?” he asked.
Rema also highlighted the influence of his Edo culture on his visuals, expressing frustration that some people misinterpret his heritage as “devilish” due to a lack of understanding.
“My Edo culture isn’t something the world is familiar with… If they don’t understand it, they label it as devilish,” he explained.
Despite the rumors, Rema emphasized that he won’t waste time clarifying false claims. “It’s just one Google search away… Am I supposed to create the music, direct the videos, and then come explain it to you? Hell no! That’s why it’s art—you interpret it for yourself.”
