Rema claims to be Afrobeats’ blueprint since 2019

Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, claimed that every Afrobeats artist who has emerged since 2019 has followed the blueprint he established.

During an interview on The Breakfast Club, the ‘Ozeba‘ hitmaker stated that he pioneered the trend of new artists debuting with an extended play (EP), which has since become a common path for Afrobeats musicians.

“When I came into the game, I brought a template. The way new artists come and dominate, mine was different. I started the EP trend. Every [new Afrobeats] artist since 2019 walked on that path like when you come out, you popped out with an EP,” Rema said.

Rema also expressed his frustration that many in the industry fail to acknowledge his contributions to Afrobeats, feeling that he needs to promote his own achievements because the industry’s “big shots” belittle his status. He explained that, while some may see it as self-praise, it is sometimes necessary to speak up when others don’t.

“A lot of people would argue [my innovation in Afrobeats]. I don’t like to feel like an Afrobeats Messiah,” Rema said. “Sometimes, people don’t like young people applauding themselves. Sometimes, it’s the truth, but it’s just not for you to say. Sometimes I can’t wait for the OGs to say it, but since no one is saying it, I might have to say it myself.”

    Watch him speak below:

Rema’s statement highlights his confidence in the impact he has had on the Afrobeats genre and his belief that his influence is shaping the next generation of artists.
