Nigerian superstar Rema has shed light on the inspiration behind his sophomore album ‘HEIS,’ revealing that his desire to challenge the norm was a major driving force.

Following the global success of Calm Down, Rema deliberately chose to defy expectations with HEIS, showcasing his uniqueness in a Nigerian pop music scene that often leans toward more familiar sounds.

In a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, Rema explained, “I don’t like to move the way people expect. I don’t like to move with the rules.” His album’s vibrant production and rapid delivery stand out as a departure from the current Afrobeats sound, underscoring his intention to create something different.

Rema emphasized that he aims to make Afrobeats that can’t be easily replicated by international artists, contrasting the approach of some who, he believes, simplify the sound to make it more accessible.

During his album listening party in London, Rema doubled down on this idea, stating that HEIS was crafted to preserve the authenticity of Afrobeats without compromising its originality.

He wants the genre to remain distinct and true to its roots, not something that can be easily imitated by those outside the culture.

Rema also shared personal insights into his musical journey, recounting how it took time before his mother fully accepted his path as an artist.

His story continues to inspire a global audience, proving that staying authentic to oneself often leads to success, even in a fast-evolving industry.

Fans in Nigeria and beyond are eager to see how Rema’s creative risks will shape the future of Afrobeats, and HEIS looks poised to leave a lasting mark.
