Tunde Ednut reveals why Wizkid is more highly respected than Davido and Burna Boy in Africa

In a video shared online, prominent Nigerian blogger Tunde Ednut sheds light on why Wizkid, whose real name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is held in higher esteem than other African artists like Davido and Burna Boy. Ednut, known for consistently covering news about Davido, conveyed this revelation through an Instagram video to his 3 million followers.

Ednut’s video highlights Wizkid’s elevated status in Africa, attributing it to his instrumental role in challenging the treatment of African artists at the BET International Awards.

The video, sourced from the Instagram page Power Plug Gram, recounts that before 2018, African artists would receive their BET Awards backstage.

In 2017, Wizkid won the BET Award but opted not to attend, publicly calling out the BET Awards for not giving African artists the same recognition as their international counterparts. Wizkid urged the BET Awards to stop inviting African artists if they couldn’t show them the same love given to international artists.

The video goes on to explain that Wizkid’s stance had a tangible impact. When Davido won the BET Award in 2018, he was invited to the main show, receiving his award in front of a live audience. Since then, African artists have consistently been honored during the main show, signaling a positive shift in the treatment of African talent at the BET Awards.

Tunde Ednut captions the video with “RESPECT!!!! ✊🏽,” underlining the acknowledgment of Wizkid’s influence and the change he catalyzed in the recognition of African artists on the international stage.
