Veteran Nigerian Musician, Writer, Sculptor & inventor of musical instruments, Sir Victor Uwaifo passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at the age of 80 in Benin, the Edo State capital.
Fondly called Guitar Boy, Sir Victor Uwaifo was one of the foremost highlife musicians in Nigeria. He was a trained sculptor, philosopher, poet and musical instrument inventor.
His hit song ‘Joromi,’ released in 1965, earned Nigeria the first Gold Disc Record ever to come out of the African continent in a competitive globe.
For his services to innovation and industry, Uwaifo was the first Benin native to receive the Nigerian National Honours; Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) in 1983.

Joromi
This is the song that made Sir Victor a staple in most non-Benin homes. The song is a classic that even outlives the legendary singer.
Uwaifo made history in Nigeria in 1996 when he received the first Golden record in Nigeria, West Africa, and Africa (given by Philips, West Africa) for his song Joromi.
Simi made use of ‘Joromi’ in her song and as the title of one of her tracks in 2017 which earned her the ire of Sir Victor who accused her of doing so without his permission.
Mami Water/Guitar Boy
The song is another of Sir Victor’s classics which he insists is the birth of an encounter with an actual “mami water” while lounging on Bar Beach in Lagos.
Tupepe ft 2baba
In 2015, Sir Victor Uwaifo teamed up with 2Baba formerly known as 2Face on the energetic tune, “Tupepe”. “Tupepe” is produced by the talented and versatile Jay Sleek and was released as the second single from the album ‘Legend Reborn’.
Kirikisi ft Ice Prince
Victor Uwaifo linked up with rap icon Ice Prince for a remix of the classic song ‘Kirikisi’ in 2014. The redefined song was a fusion of highlife and reggae with elements of Hip-Hop.
Do Amen Do
Sung primarily in his native Benin dialect, the highlife song is another of Sir Victor’s hit songs that render praises to the creator. The beautiful part of this song is the excellent use of instrumentals.
