Timi Dakolo is Nigeria’s self-acclaimed King of Soul and for a good reason. His songs have the power to evoke emotions from the deepest part of your heart.
In 2007, Timi Dakolo emerged winner of the inaugural season of Idols West Africa and in 2009, released his first set of songs.
Although he had released several songs, he didn’t really gain attention until the release of “Iyawo Mi” in 2014. The Cobhams produced song was praised for the soulful vocals and lyrics.
Since then Timi has gone on to release several other singles, most of them Love-themed. Timi continues to defy the norms of an industry that seems to favor mostly pop music; his music commands a massive following for a genre of alternative music that is treated as a secondary product in this clime.
The singer clocked 40 years on the 20th of January and we compiled a list of 5 of his songs that would make you fall in love.

Iyawo Mi
Iyawo Mi was Timi’s breakthrough song. The Love produced by Cobhams Asuquo is a love letter delivered with soft soulful vocals by Timi Dakolo and a traditional melody surrounded by horns that add an amazing feel to the song.
Just like many of his songs, the music video features his wife, Busola Dakolo.
Great Nation
While most of Timi’s songs are dedicated to his wife, “Great Nation” was a love song to Nigeria.
“Great Nation” reeks of great songwriting which is one of his best tracks to date. Timi tells us how we can build a great nation through peace, unity, and justice.
“We’re all we have, We’ll defend our land, We believe in this nation, and we know we’ll get there, We’re all we have, we’ll defend our land, We believe in Nigeria and the promise she holds, And that one day we’ll shine like the sun, We’re a great nation…” he sings
Medicine
Partnered with Cobhams for another romantic ballad, Timi sings of his wife being the cure to his loneliness.
“Medicine” is classic released during Valentine’s Day in 2017. In the music video which the singer claims is based on a true story, Timi’s wife travels for an event leaving to take care of their kids for some days.
It doesn’t take too long for him to realize that he lacks adequate knowledge about taking care of his family without the help of his wife.
I Never Know say
Also produced by Cobhams, “I Never Know Say” is a highlife tune that also shares similar traits like ‘Iyawo Mi‘.
The solid ballad tune with a catchy rhythm, vocals, and trumpet will get you dancing with your loved one.
