In January 2017, Mayorkun was just an upcoming singer, promising act, with one hit, “Eleko,” which was propelled by his contract with pop star, Davido. BUT, in december, it was a very different story. Mayorkun came out of 2017 a star. A bonafide star, with many hits to his credit.
With songs like “Love You Tire,” featuring Mr Eazi, “Sade,” the smash hit, “Mama” and “Che Che,” Mayorkun is three steps above his peers who are still struggling to make hits, even with the big platforms they’ve been opportuned to showcase on. And that was why his losing the “Best New Act” to Maleek Berry at the SoundCity MVP Awards wasn’t plausible. No one could imagine that.
“Mama,” produced by Kiddominant was the song that catapaulted him to that pop star level. It was released in August, and somehow, it still became one of 2017’s hottest tracks. “Che Che,” released in November, was an instant hit. And he closed the year with a guest verse on Ycee’s Komije.
Then he rode into 2018 triumphantly, like Jesus rode into Jerusalem on
an ass (whatever this means in 2018). He started off on DMW’s collective hit single, “Mind,” which also features Davido, Dremo and Perruzzi. And now, we have his 2018 solo debut. It’s a bang called “Bobo,” the real “Afrobeat with a bang!!!”
“Bobo” balances everything involved in making a hit, a hit. The beat comes from Lush and the rave of the moment, Killertunes. A top-notch and “master-crafted” instrumental. Seems like this Afrobeat thang ain’t going down.
The vocals from Mayorkun is very tight too. He brings Davido along to do justice to the track. And, his lyrical prowess is a hunny. Makes me wonder if a singer can get nominated for “Lyricist On The Roll.” Or what is “Suit yourself like Jidenna”? That’s probably the most intelligent one-liner you’ll hear in 2018. Everything was then capped by Tee-Y Mix, making sure the song doesn’t sound like that Davido song, that sounds like it isn’t properly mixed. *winks*
The Video, shot by Clarence Peters, is nothing less than impressive. And, yeah, Davido wasn’t absent for the shook. He even came closer. Everything worked out perfectly, and already you’ll be seeing posts with “Na money be fine bobo.”
This is Mayorkun on another level. A superstar level, and this is definitely a good way to start of the year. It’s just telling us, you can’t be with Davido and not understand the pop culture. DMW understands, OBO understands, Mayorkun does too.
You have to feel this song yourself!!!
