Here are some reactions following Japan’s 2-1 victory over Germany.
The World Cup keeps delivering unexpected twists, and Wednesday was no exception as Japan stunned Germany with a 2-1 win.
Though it first appeared to be going according to plan for the 2014 winners, Germany and Japan gave us to a truly fascinating show after Croatia and Morocco’s snooze-fest.
This isn’t the first surprise of the World Cup. Argentina was stunned by Saudi Arabia after taking a 1-0 lead, as a second-half comeback saw Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari hit in short succession to cancel out Lionel Messi’s penalty.
Germany seemed uneasy in the group stage after their elimination at the same point in 2018, but Japan’s victory over Germany leaves Group E wide open before Spain’s match with Costa Rica.
With talents like Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Muller, and Antonio Rudiger in the lineup, Hansi Flick’s team was anticipated to see out the match and score their first points thanks to an Ilkay Gundogan penalty.
Fans and football lovers have some comments to make about the match after Germany’s second-half collapse and some excellent substitutions by Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu turned the game around.
What a goal that was from Japan. An exquisite first touch from Asano who finished it off beautifully.

Ritsu Doan, a substitute, ultimately defeated Manuel Neuer, who had previously made a number of saves to maintain his team ahead.

Just seven minutes after Doan’s 75th-minute attempt, Takuma Asano, another substitute off the bench, received a pass from Ko Itakura and beat Neuer at his near post to complete the Samurai Blue’s miraculous comeback.
