Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, widely known as 2Baba, has stirred controversy following his remarks about Nigeria’s development over the years.

During an interview with Wazobia TV, the veteran singer stated that, in his view, the country is in a better place now compared to the past.

2Baba went on to describe himself as a self-appointed ambassador of Nigeria, explaining that he is committed to representing the country positively on the global stage and contributing, in his own way, to its progress.

“We are better off than many years ago. Just look at it. It’s still ongoing, but I will continue doing it. I will set up my own position and try to make a difference. I’ll try to make it work because I know where I stand. I have personally appointed myself as an ambassador of Nigeria an ambassador everywhere, I am a self-appointed ambassador of Nigeria to everywhere,” he stated.

However, his comments have drawn criticism from many Nigerians online, with some arguing that his statement does not reflect the current realities of insecurity and economic hardship facing the country.

Speaking with media personality Yaw on Wazobia FM, the iconic singer—born Innocent Idibia—credited the genre’s ongoing resilience to the rising wave of young talent.

According to him, the new generation of musicians is not only keeping Afrobeats alive but also pushing it to greater heights both in Nigeria and internationally.

“Afrobeats can never die. If you listen to some of the young artists now, you’ll see the genre is in very capable hands,” 2Baba said, highlighting their creativity, energy, and distinctive styles as key drivers of Afrobeats’ sustained success.
