Victor Osimhen has carved out a new chapter in Nigerian football history, becoming the first player from the country to hit double figures in the UEFA Champions League.

The Super Eagles striker reached the milestone dramatically on Tuesday night, September 30, 2025, when he coolly converted from the penalty spot to hand Galatasaray a 1–0 win over Liverpool in Istanbul.

The result not only gave the Turkish champions a famous victory but also condemned the Reds to back-to-back defeats across all competitions.

Osimhen’s achievement adds another feather to his already glittering cap. Known for his blistering pace, strength, and relentless eye for goal, the 26-year-old has terrorized Europe’s toughest defences and now sits alone at the top of Nigeria’s Champions League scorers’ chart.

Before Osimhen’s record-breaking strike, Obafemi Martins had held the benchmark with 9 goals from his days at Inter Milan and Wolfsburg.

Others who left their mark on Europe’s biggest stage include Yakubu Aiyegbeni (4 goals with Maccabi Haifa), Nwankwo Kanu (4 with Ajax and Arsenal), Finidi George (4 with Ajax), and Shola Ameobi (3 with Newcastle United).

For Galatasaray, Osimhen’s heroics are timely as they look to push further in the group stages, while for Nigerian football, his name is now firmly etched among the continent’s Champions League greats.
