Tems wins Best African Music Performance category at the 67th Grammys

Nigerian singer and songwriter, Tems, has secured her second Grammy award, winning the Best African Music Performance category at the 67th Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles.
Tems triumphed over top contenders, including Yemi Alade’s ‘Tomorrow,’ Asake’s ‘MMS‘ featuring Wizkid, Chris Brown’s ‘Sensational‘ featuring Davido and Lojay, and Burna Boy’s ‘Higher.’
This marks a significant milestone for the Afrobeats star, reinforcing her growing influence on the global music scene.
In an emotional acceptance speech, the singer expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying: “Wow, dear God. Thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team.
She went on to dedicate the award to her mother, whose birthday coincided with the event, adding: “Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you ma because she has really done a lot for me and my brother. Happy birthday mum. And I want to thank my team. Muyiwa, Wale, my beautiful stylist, and lovely girls… I love you guys.
“Thank you so much. To God be the glory. Honestly, He has changed my life so much.”

This year’s ‘Best African Music Performance’ category continued to highlight Nigeria’s dominance in global music, as all the nominated songs featured Nigerian artists.
The category was introduced in 2024, with South African singer Tyla winning the inaugural award for her hit single ‘Water.’
Despite her Grammy win, Tems missed out on two other nominations. She lost ‘Best R&B Song’ to American singer SZA and also fell short in the Best Global Music Album category, where her project ‘Born In The Wild’ was edged out by Matt B’s ‘Alkebulan II,’ featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Nigerian star Rema was also nominated in the category for his album ‘Heis.’
With this latest achievement, Tems continues to cement her legacy as one of Nigeria’s most decorated international artists, further pushing the boundaries of Afrobeats and R&B on the global stage.
