Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold, popularly known as AG BABY, has opened up about one of the first things he considered before taking his relationship with fellow singer Simi seriously.
Speaking on the One54 Africa podcast, the singer explained that confirming their genotype compatibility was an important step for him before pursuing a relationship that could eventually lead to marriage and children.
According to Adekunle Gold, he viewed the decision less as a matter of romance and more as a responsibility to the children they could potentially have together.
“There’s no way I would have done that. When we met, the first thing we did, I had to know her genotype or that we match. If we did not… so she’s AA,” he said.
The singer went on to speak about the need for greater awareness around sickle cell disease, particularly among young people who may not know the implications of genotype compatibility when choosing a partner.
“There’s so much awareness that needs to be done, you know, tell people that if you have sickle cell, forget love, you can’t do it. It makes no sense, because you’re about to bring a child to the world and the child is about to be sickly. What’s the point?” he said.
Adekunle Gold further maintained that he would not have gone ahead with marriage if he and Simi had incompatible genotypes. For him, the decision was ultimately about avoiding a situation that could put their future children at risk.

His position is also connected to his personal experience with sickle cell disease. Having lived with the condition throughout his life, the singer has consistently used his platform to encourage conversations around genotype testing and sickle cell awareness.
Beyond speaking publicly about the issue, Adekunle Gold has also established a foundation to support people affected by sickle cell disease and raise awareness of the condition.
The singer and Simi have since built a family together after years of friendship and romance, becoming one of Nigeria’s most recognisable celebrity couples while continuing to maintain successful careers in music.
