    • Burna Boy Breaks Spotify Record, Becomes Most-Streamed African Artist by Monthly Listeners

Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar Burna Boy has reached another historic milestone, becoming the African artist with the highest number of monthly listeners ever recorded on Spotify.

The Afrofusion star has climbed to 47.4 million monthly listeners, surpassing the previous record held by South African singer Tyla and setting a new benchmark for African music on the global streaming platform.

The achievement comes on the back of the remarkable success of Dai Dai, Burna Boy’s official 2026 FIFA World Cup anthem with Colombian music icon Shakira. Since its release, the song has enjoyed explosive global success, propelling the Nigerian star to new heights on Spotify.

The record-breaking single reached No. 1 on the Spotify Global Top Songs chart on June 30, making Burna Boy the first African lead artist to achieve the feat. The accomplishment also marked the first time an African artist had topped the chart since Wizkid’s appearance on Drake’s global smash One Dance in 2016.

Before Burna Boy’s latest feat, Tyla held the African record after reaching 46.58 million monthly listeners in December 2025. However, the worldwide popularity of Dai Dai has now seen Burna Boy reclaim the top spot with a new all-time high.

Released on May 15 as the official anthem of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Dai Dai has already amassed more than 123 million Spotify streams.

The multilingual record, performed in English, Spanish, Italian, French, and Japanese, blends Shakira’s signature pop sound with Burna Boy’s Afrofusion style. The song also features songwriting contributions from Ed Sheeran, Jon Bellion and other acclaimed writers.

Burna Boy and Shakira first performed the anthem during the World Cup opening ceremony on June 11, while the song has remained in the spotlight after being added to Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour setlist for the North American leg. Its star-studded music video, featuring appearances from Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, has further expanded its global reach.

With the World Cup still ongoing and the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the song continues to gain momentum, raising the possibility of Burna Boy becoming the first African artist to surpass 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

The latest achievement adds another chapter to an already remarkable streaming record. In 2025, Burna Boy amassed 1.986 billion Spotify streams, the highest annual total ever recorded by an African artist, ahead of Wizkid and Tyla.

He also remains the first African musician to have two studio albums individually exceed one billion streams on the platform, further cementing his place among the continent’s most successful global exports.
