Akon Claims Most Artists Are Famous but Not Rich, Explains Where the Real Money Is in Music

Senegalese-American music star Akon has sparked fresh debate about the realities of the entertainment industry after sharing his views on how money is distributed within the music business.
According to Akon, the public often associates fame with wealth, but behind the scenes, many of the biggest financial rewards go to individuals working in other areas of the business.
The singer explained that executives and professionals working behind the scenes often earn more than the artists themselves, even when those artists enjoy global recognition and popularity.
“In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one but he is the most famous. If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist. But if you want to make real money go to other sectors of music business, like the producer, songwriter, manager, agent and attorney. There are so many areas in the entertainment field that you can really maximise,” he said.
Akon went on to highlight the importance of understanding the business side of entertainment, suggesting that careers in songwriting, management, production, legal representation, and talent management can often provide stronger financial opportunities than performing itself.

His remarks have once again drawn attention to ongoing conversations about artist compensation, music ownership, royalty structures, and the often-overlooked professionals who help drive the industry’s success behind the scenes.
While many aspiring musicians dream of the spotlight, Akon’s comments serve as a reminder that some of the most lucrative positions in entertainment may exist away from the stage and outside public view.
