Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about why he prioritises building and maintaining his influence in Nigeria rather than chasing approval from Western audiences, insisting that his global reputation is rooted in the success he has achieved at home.
Speaking during a recent Twitch livestream with streamer and comedian Carter Efe, the award-winning singer encouraged the content creator to continue investing in his Nigerian audience, stressing that lasting international recognition often begins with dominating one’s local market.
βIt’s very important to take over your home…The Western validation is good and sweet, but they are looking at your motion here. The motion I have in Yankee (overseas) is because they know in Nigeria, I am the King,β Davido said.
The singer explained that the respect he receives internationally is directly connected to his standing within Nigeria, arguing that foreign audiences and industry players pay close attention to an artist’s influence in their home country before fully embracing them.
To illustrate his point, Davido recalled the experience of Jamaican reggae artist YG Marley, who was surprised by the scale of his popularity during a visit to Nigeria.
According to the Afrobeats star, Marley witnessed firsthand the level of recognition and support he enjoys while the pair were filming the music video for their collaboration Awuke.
Davido’s comments came as he encouraged Carter Efe following the streamer’s disappointment over missing Kai Cenat’s Streamers University in the United States. Efe had secured a place in the highly competitive programme but was unable to attend after failing to obtain a U.S. visa.
The comedian has spoken about the difficulties he faced travelling to the United States, with recent immigration restrictions affecting applicants from several countries, including Nigeria. Davido used the moment to remind him that building a strong presence in Nigeria could ultimately open even bigger opportunities internationally.
For Davido, the message was clear: while global recognition is valuable, true influence starts with earning respect at home. He believes that international success becomes more meaningful and more sustainable when it is built on a solid foundation of local support and cultural relevance.
