Blaqbonez recalls university in OAU days alongside peers who became stars

Nigerian rapper Blaqbonez has sent fans into a wave of nostalgia after reflecting on his university days, where he shared the same campus with artists who would later become Afrobeats powerhouses.
In a recently surfaced interview clip on Monday, September 22, 2025, the Chocolate City rapper revealed that he, Asake, Fireboy DML, and Superboy Cheque were all students at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Osun State, during the same period.
Describing the experience as “crazy,” Blaqbonez recounted how they managed to juggle academics with music, often performing at shows despite OAU’s reputation for being strictly academic-focused.
“OAU was not a school for… doing all that shit, for artists performing, bro. This is a school where we’d only do serious shit,” he said, laughing. “But somehow all of us came in at the same time and all left at the same time and the school went back to business.”
The revelation has sparked admiration among fans, who see it as a remarkable coincidence that some of today’s biggest Afrobeats stars once shared lecture halls and small campus stages before breaking into global recognition.
What now reads as a defining chapter in Nigerian music history underscores the role OAU played as an unlikely incubator for creativity, producing artists whose influence now stretches across continents. It is also a reminder that the superstars filling stadiums today once started as undergraduates chasing their dreams on campus grounds.
