“Banking Wasn’t My Calling” — Rapper CDQ Opens Up on Ditching Suit and Tie for the Mic
Renowned Nigerian rapper CDQ has shed light on his decision to abandon a budding banking career to pursue his lifelong passion for music.
In a candid interview on The Echo Room, the ‘Nowo Soke’ crooner explained that he initially took on a banking job out of respect for his late father’s wishes. However, despite honoring that dream, the rapper confessed he felt misplaced and emotionally disconnected from the profession.
“I used to write lyrics during work hours instead of doing my actual job,” he admitted, reflecting on the internal struggle he faced while employed in the financial sector.
CDQ also recalled his life-changing conversation with ace music producer Masterkraft, who not only sheltered him during that period but also lent him suits for his corporate job. According to him, Masterkraft was stunned when he revealed he had resigned from the bank.
“I didn’t tell my mum or any family member. I just left the house and moved in with Masterkraft at the studio,” CDQ recounted. “I told him that banking was never my passion. I might do it to survive, but music gives me peace—even without financial rewards.”
With sheer conviction, the rapper told Masterkraft they should go all in on music, boldly predicting a breakthrough in just six months.

True to his words, the duo didn’t have to wait long. A lucrative opportunity soon came their way, helping them transition from the trenches to Lekki’s upscale environment.
CDQ shot into mainstream success in 2016 with the release of ‘Indomie,’ a track that featured both Masterkraft and Olamide. A remix of the song, which brought Davido into the mix, further elevated his status in the music industry.
Today, CDQ stands as a testament to the power of following one’s passion, with his story inspiring many young Nigerians chasing unconventional dreams.
