Simi Opens Up on Struggles With Industry Friendships: “I Have the Wrong Personality for This”
Award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter Simi has spoken candidly about her struggle to form close friendships within the entertainment industry, pointing to her introverted nature and lack of interest in the social dynamics that come with fame.
During a recent interview with media personality VJ Adams, the Duduke crooner revealed that her reserved personality often keeps her from connecting deeply with others in the music scene.
“My friends in the industry, they’re my guys. They’re not friends because they are in the industry,” Simi said, making it clear that any bond she shares with colleagues stems from genuine connection rather than industry networking.
Simi further disclosed that while her love for music fuels her career, the spotlight and its accompanying social expectations don’t align with who she is at her core.
“I’m really bad at that and I always say that I think I have the wrong personality for the industry I have the passion for. I’m only doing music because I like music and there are many things that I like and know how to do but I feel like my personality is not compatible.”
Known for her soulful voice and relatable lyrics, Simi admitted that networking and media engagement are areas she struggles with.
“I’m really not good at networking and I don’t know how to engage like that. The rapport I even have with you I don’t have with many people in the media. These things don’t come to me naturally so I have to be extra at it,” she confessed.
Despite the challenges, Simi has remained one of Nigeria’s most respected voices in music, with a growing fanbase that connects to her authenticity and vulnerability — traits that clearly extend beyond her music and into how she approaches life in the limelight.
