Portable says speaking good English does not guarantee being given a visa
Nigerian street-hop artist Portable has weighed in on the visa application process, arguing that fluency in English has little to do with securing entry into foreign countries.
During a recent appearance on the Echoo Room podcast, the outspoken singer shared his perspective, stating that he doesn’t concern himself with speaking perfect English during visa interviews.
Instead, he emphasized that having the correct documentation and a valid travel purpose hold far more weight.
“English isn’t what gets you a visa, for real. When I go for interviews, I tell them my name and that I’m an artist coming in for a show. I could say, ‘I have 20 shows lined up across a month, I’ve been to London, now I’m going to Canada. I’ve been paid, and I’m not about to refund that money. I’ve booked my hotel.’”
He further questioned why English proficiency should be a factor when many fluent speakers still get rejected.
“What English are people speaking that I can’t? Even when someone with better English applies, they might not get it.”
Portable’s remarks quickly gained traction online, sparking debates among Nigerians. Many supported his view, pointing out that countless non-English speakers successfully travel and conduct business worldwide without fluency in the language.
The conversation adds to Portable’s growing reputation for voicing unconventional takes on social issues while maintaining his signature streetwise perspective.
