Fireboy DML reveals how he once tried to copy Beyoncé

Nigerian artist Fireboy DML has shared an anecdote about his attempt to emulate American superstar Beyoncé’s performance routine. However, he admitted that keeping up with the multiple Grammy winner proved challenging.

Fireboy disclosed that instead of persisting in imitation, he chose to focus on personal growth. He embarked on artist development to enhance his stage presence and hone his craft.

Speaking in a recent interview with RollingStone, he said: “Right from time, even when I used to write my saddest songs, I used to imagine myself playing them in front of millions of people. I always imagine myself on stage when I write my songs.

“So taking that energy from the studio to stage is really a piece of cake for me. What matters to me is making sure that I have fun. When I enjoy myself, everyone else enjoyed themselves. Step by step, I learned from the greats, I studied; did artist development stuff like vocal training.

“There was a time I tried to copy Beyonce’s routine. But I didn’t last two days.”

Fireboy has reaffirmed that his music style should not be categorized as Afrobeats. Despite this, he emphasized that his music always reflects his roots and identity.

The ‘Peru‘ crooner shared these insights as a guest on the latest episode of the Amazon Music podcast, ‘B And N.‘ This statement sheds light on Fireboy DML’s artistic perspective and the importance he places on staying true to his cultural heritage while exploring diverse musical genres.

He said, “As I always said, I don’t make Afrobeats. I just sort of like combined stuffs. I do different kinds of music so even when I am making R&B or pop, you can hear the Yoruba ‘h’ factor.

“You just know that this is not an American or British person, so you can always tell that my roots and my identity is always in my music.”
