Rema makes triumphant return to hometown, Benin City after six years
Afrobeats sensation Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, embarked on a significant journey as he returned to his hometown of Benin City after a six-year absence.
This homecoming held immense importance for the talented artist, who had left the historic city in pursuit of broader horizons and opportunities.
A viral video surfaced online on Thursday, March 28, 2024, capturing the momentous return of the Mavin artist. Rema was joined by fellow indigenous entertainers from his state, including Shallipopi and singer Davido’s aide, Israel DMW.
The footage showcased Rema, renowned for hits like “Calm Down,” leading the group down the plane aisle, engaging warmly with fellow passengers.
Upon landing, a heartwarming scene unfolded as a cultural dance troupe welcomed Rema with open arms at the airport, highlighting the rich heritage and hospitality of Benin City.

Rema’s journey to musical stardom began with his breakout single “Dumebi” in 2019. Prior to this, he had already secured a record deal with D’Prince’s label, Jonzing World, and had connections with Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records.
His 2022 single “Calm Down,” especially the remix featuring American pop star Selena Gomez, gained international acclaim. The remix soared to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominated the United States Afrobeats Songs chart for an unprecedented 58 weeks.
