South African pop sensation Tyla Laura Seethal, also known as Tyla, has revealed her love for Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Asake. In a recent feature in Rolling Stone, she discussed her breakout single and the influence of Afrobeats on her musical style.

Tyla expressed her love for Asake’s vocal style, describing it as choir-like and particularly praising the ‘Joha’ crooner’s unique approach.

Alongside her appreciation for Afrobeats, she emphasized that her music draws inspiration from Amapiano, a popular genre in her home country, South Africa, as well as her childhood R&B influences. These diverse musical elements converge to shape the core inspiration for her hit single ‘Water.’

She said, “Amapiano music is the core of it [‘Water’] in my opinion. And just all of the influences from growing up like Rihanna and all the R&B girlies, R&B boys, pop girls. That type of influences I love bringing into my music.

“Something I really love in Afrobeats music is when I hear those step vocals that sound like a choir, almost. And I really love the way Asake uses it. I just always love the way it sounds. So, with the chorus [of my song ‘Water,’ I incorporated it]. Obviously, people can’t stop singing, they can’t get it out of their minds, which I love.”
