There was a time doing Music was considered a big risk and many Nigerian Parents were not in support of their children abandoning professional jobs to become artists.

Even while parents always want the best for their children, the path they want them to take may not always be in their children’s best interests. This is why there are occasional conflicts of interest when it comes to a child’s career choice.

Gone are the days when picking a profession for your child was considered the greatest option. People nowadays go after their dreams without their parents trying to talk them out of it.

Here are some Nigerian ARtists who had to defy their parents’ wishes to pursue their dream as musicians.

Many people would be surprised to learn that Davido’s father did not want him to become the musician he is today. Davido’s billionaire father, Adedeji Adeleke, has always wanted his son, to work for one of his businesses.

Davido once ran away from home because of his burning desire to do music. As a result, he began to get closer to several well-known musicians in the music industry in order to understand the ropes.

His father allegedly threatened to arrest these well-known musicians because he believed they were assisting him.

All of this did not deter Davido, who is now the head of the DMW label and one of Africa’s most popular artists.

Timaya had a difficult childhood growing up. This is due to his father’s opposition to him being a musician.

For a time, he was separated from his parents as a result of this.

The musician once revealed that his father wanted him to be a banker rather than an artist when he was younger. He had never desired this for himself, and it drove him to leave his home on multiple occasions.

Timaya was forced to sleep on the street due to a lack of options.

Innocent Idibia, better known as 2Baba or Tuface Idibia, was also one of the children whose parents did not want him to pursue a career in music.

However, if he had not insisted on pursuing a career in music, the moniker 2face/2Baba would not have emerged.

According to “A Good Guy, Bad Guy Book,” where he published his biography, the popular singer stated that his mother did not want him to be a musician, but rather someone with white-collar employment such as a lawyer or a doctor.

    Mayorkun

    Mayorkun

Mayorkun, a well-known Nigerian musician, is the son of Nollywood actress Toyin Adewale.

Her mother was initially sceptical of her son’s desire to be a musician. She admitted that she was apprehensive about Mayorkun’s involvement in the entertainment sector until Mayorkun’s father persuaded her otherwise.

Mayorkun was first signed to Davido’s record company, DMW, and has had a successful career since then.

    Oxlade

Oxlade is one of the new bloods dominating the industry with his melodious sounds, however, the singer had to defy his father’s wishes so he could pursue a career in music.

In an interview with Joey Akan, Oxlade recounts the story of how his father abandoned him at Ogbomosho due to his career choice.

According to him, he took a ride with his father, a Lecturer at Lagos State University who had been away for lengthy periods after his mother’s death when he was an adolescent.

His father was reintroduced into his life because he had the inside contacts and influence to get Oxlade admitted to the school.

When they arrived in Ogbomosho, a town five hours away from home in Oyo state, Papa Oxlade pulled over and ordered his son out of the car.

His objection stems from his displeasure with Oxlade’s musical ambitions. He was simply unconvinced by his son’s talent.

Their family was renowned for their work in academia, and this son, who he was going out on a limb for, would not be the one to ‘loaf around’ while trying his hands with something as unstable as a career in music.
