Compared to how a few past years has started, in terms of music, one could say 2019 has been very slow – you may even say dull. What happened? Nobody knows but even in the midst of that, the number of songs that were pumping in daily was still unprecedented. A few, stuck. And eventually became stuffs we’ll have to remember about the first quarter of 2019. You may wanna update your playlist to include all of these songs, again. Let’s get at it!
Burna Boy – Dangote
The whole artist of the year hype have not even vanished when Burna Boy came with this banging tune. Right timing, that is. It was a time of the year when Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, was announced to have went up the ranks. Boom, Burna hooked Kel P for an afro beat and did the work. It’s no doubt one of the best songs that rocked the most part of the 2019 we have seen.
Olamide – Woske
“Woske” was very important for the culture, and Olamide Baddo has always been all about that. First it’s a collaboration with the rave producer of the moment, Killertunes. And two, it’s that type of cool afro sound that was infused with enough street vibe, to push the Zanku wave. The video was so lit! Besides, it was his first single of the year and is destined to be like some kind of “Science Student.”
It’s a big hit, and yeah, people loved and still love the jam!
Patoranking – Confirm Ft. Davido
Most of his career, Patoranking has been that guy that just does his music and flex up. And he’s got a whole lot of hits, and a long list of collabos with several top artists. So, when a Davido-collab was announced, it got all the hype it could get, at the moment. As usual, the guys didn’t disappoint. Even if they did, who wasn’t expecting it to be a hit?
Slimcase – Azaman Ft. 2Baba, Peruzzi, Larry Gaga
Shaku-shaku faded, Slimcase didn’t. He again proves to all naysayers that he’s not just a one-hit wonder, but he’s a very talented artist that deserves much more attention. “Azaman” is all shades of amazing. And, he putting the hottest kid on the block, Peruzzi and legendary 2Baba on it, is probably his best decision ever. Not so bad, for someone who hit limelight from a D’banj collabo, about a year ago. And by not so bad, I mean, extremely good!!!!
2Baba – Oyi
2Baba will never retire from music, like many of his other colleagues have. Partly cause he knows his onions well and partly cause we love him.
He kick started 2019 with good music, and set the bar high, really. “Oyi” isn’t just another love song, but it has that vibe that 2baba has mastered, over the years. Cool afro, and beautiful tune. It’s 2019’s first hit, and 2baba blessed us with it.
Victor AD – Tire You Ft. Davido
Before this, a lot of people still think Victor AD is just a one-hit wonder and that his follow up efforts to his “Wetin You Gain” smash hit were below par. A collaboration with David could fix that, obviously.
“Tire You” is that song that talks about the hustle and how everyone should be tired of suffering. Maybe it wasn’t Davido that made the song better, but he was definitely the one that made it hit that much! It’s another win for Victor (no pun intended).
Niniola – Designer Ft. Sarz
When a hit-maker meets a hit-maker, well what you have can’t be less than “Designer.” Afro-house Queen, Niniola, again hooked up with her favorite producer, Sarz (who’s helped her churn many hits), and they put out “Designer” her first single this year. A hit single!
Kizz Daniel – Fvck You
As much as this song has too many uncensored words, this is also a big one for Kizz. The Young Jonn-produced hit, has even spurred a trend on Social Media, and many many celebrities have jumped on it. Kizz Daniel should just go ton rest, 2019 is secure for him!
Falz – Talk
Falz wanted to drop an album that will follow in the footsteps of Legend, Fela Kuti, who often talked about socio-political issues as they affect Africa and her people.
“Moral Instruction” was the album, and it made so much sense. “Talk” was the only single that was pre-released and it happened just the same way “This Is Nigeria” played out, last year. It was trending for days, and also sparked a fresh conversation in the music circle.
Falz may not be Fela, but his music, is close.
Simi – Ayo
Simi follows up her collaboration with Adekunle Gold, “Promise” with this track, “Ayo.” The single quickly became everyone’s favorite, and it was al over the air waves.
Simi has been up to many things lately, tying the knot with her lover, acting in a movie and also, making new music. It’s worked out well so far and it’s cool, don’t you think?
