‘I dumbed it down so I can sell these records’ – Odumodublvck
Nigerian hip-hop artist Odumodublvck has disclosed his ability to rap in a hardcore style reminiscent of American star Eminem. However, he has opted to tailor his lyrics for broader comprehension among Nigerian fans.
In a recent podcast interview, OdumoduBlvck elaborated on his decision, stating that the predominant preference for melodic music in Nigeria influenced his choice to simplify his rap style. He aimed to widen his appeal and attain commercial success by catering to the prevailing taste of the audience.
Expressing his aspiration to inject more dynamism into Nigerian rap, OdumoduBlvck drew parallels to Wizkid’s impact on revolutionizing R&B in the country, underscoring his commitment to evolving the genre within the Nigerian music landscape.
Odumodublvck stated, “Some Nigerians did pure rap but they didn’t make it exciting for people to gravitate towards it. People said my rap sounds like nursery school rhymes. I dumbed it down so I can sell these records, so you don’t have to think twice. When you listen to my rap, if you understand the lingo you get it once. You don’t have to go to any dictionary. It’s not hardcore rap. It’s easy. I’ve made it exciting. Just like Wizkid, I want to make my rap sweet and exciting”.

While Odumodublvck acknowledges his capacity to deliver hardcore rap akin to Eminem’s, he also recognizes the limitations of such a style within the Nigerian music scene. He understands that his audience tends to gravitate towards rap that is more straightforward and relatable than intricate and complex.
In light of this understanding, Odumodublvck has made a conscious decision to adapt his rap style to align with the preferences of his Nigerian audience. By simplifying his lyrics and focusing on themes that resonate with his listeners, he aims to ensure his music connects more deeply with his fanbase and enjoys greater acceptance within the Nigerian rap community.
