Leading this year’s nominations are some of the biggest names shaping the sound worldwide, including Burna Boy, Rema, and Wizkid—artists who have consistently pushed African music onto the global stage.

They are joined by Ghanaian-American rising star MOLIY and South African breakout act Tyla, making the category a dynamic mix of established heavyweights and new-generation voices redefining the genre’s reach.

The inclusion of these artists reflects just how expansive Afrobeats—and its related sounds—has become, stretching across continents while continuing to evolve.

Looking back, Tyla made history at the 2025 edition of the awards by winning Favorite Afrobeats Artist, beating out strong contenders like Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Asake. Her victory marked a significant moment for the South African star, cementing her place in the global conversation.

Wizkid, on the other hand, still holds a special place in the category’s history as its first-ever winner, having claimed the inaugural Favorite Afrobeats Artist award in 2022.

With this year’s nominees, the conversation isn’t just about who wins—it’s about how far the genre has come, and the diverse set of artists now carrying Afrobeats into its next global chapter.

The 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) is set to celebrate Africa’s biggest hits, with Nigerian artists making a strong showing in the “African Song of the Year” category.

The nominations highlight the continued influence of Nigerian music across the continent. Last year, the award went to “Tshwala Bam” by people, “Titom,” “Nigerian singer,” and Burna Boy, which became a fan-favourite anthem.

For 2026, Davido leads the Nigerian entries with two notable nominations. His 2025 hit “With You,” featuring Omah Lay from the album 5ive, has garnered global acclaim, including a 2026 Grammy nomination. Davido also appears on “Nakupenda,” an energetic Amapiano track by South African duo TXC, featuring Shoday, Scotts Maphuma, Zlatan, and AL Xapo, blending Nigerian and South African sounds to create a standout contender.

Other Nigerian songs nominated in the category include Rema’s “Kelebu,” Fido’s “Joy Is Coming,” and “Laho II” by Shallipopi and Burna Boy. South African star Tyla is also nominated for her 2025 hit “Chanel.”

With a diverse lineup of songs spanning Afrobeats, Amapiano, and contemporary African pop, the competition promises to be fierce, showcasing the vibrancy and innovation of African music.

Nigerian singer and producer Crayon, real name Charles Chibueze Chukwu, has sparked a major stir online with a series of explosive messages directed at Don Jazzy, Rema, and the iconic Mavin Records.

The Lagos-born 28-year-old, who climbed the ranks of Mavin’s talent pipeline before officially joining Blowtime Entertainment, an imprint linked to Mavin, in 2019, went on a social media tirade that fans are calling one of the most dramatic artist-label clashes in recent memory.

Crayon’s posts blended playful affection with scathing attacks. He kicked off with an almost bewildering shoutout to Don Jazzy:
“Don jazzy na my boy!!!!!! Una dey maddddd!!?? Shayennnnn sharayyyyyy333”

But the tone shifted sharply, taking aim at the label’s COO:
“Tega highest criminal!!!!!!!!!”

He didn’t stop there. The singer broadened his target to Mavin Records itself, declaring:
“Mavin is going down!!!!!!”

And then he set his sights on the label’s biggest star:
“Rema for the next 100 years no feature. You stole my star from me. Yeah I took tha shiiiiii backkkkk hoeeeeerrrr!!!!! Snakkkkkkkeeeeeesssssssss.”

Crayon even drew comparisons between himself and his colleague:
“I’m HYM!!!! Not REMA!!!! Niggaaaaa I’m 69 in Africa!!!!!!!”

Industry observers note that the outburst may not be entirely out of the blue. Crayon’s recent single, Baami, was released without the usual promotional push from Mavin, sparking speculation that he might be stepping into a more independent phase of his career—or even planning a full departure from the label.

Fans also point to the singer’s quieter public presence since the passing of his mother last year, suggesting personal grief may be amplifying industry frustrations.

Adding fuel to the fire, Baami was released under a new label called “Olodum Ent” rather than Mavin Records, signaling a potential career pivot. The track, produced by Crayon’s frequent collaborator Ozedikus, arrived without the familiar Mavin branding and promotional machinery.

Crayon also reached out for creative contributions for his new imprint, tweeting:
“Any weird creatives that can come with OLODUM ENT FLAGGSSSSS!!!! Gets 500 million naira cash !!!!! With love WARAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!”

As fans and industry insiders dissect every tweet, it’s clear that Crayon’s next moves, whether independent releases or a complete break from Mavin, will be closely watched. One thing is certain: the Afropop star is making it loud and clear that he’s charting his own path.

Since 2020, Asake has firmly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in Nigeria’s music scene, dominating the list of most-streamed albums of all time in the country.

According to data from Nigeria’s leading music chart publication, TurnTable Charts, the singer’s debut and sophomore albums have emerged as the most-streamed records since digital music consumption skyrocketed.

Asake Tops Nigeria’s All-Time Most Streamed Albums Chart

At the very top sits Asake’s 2023 sophomore album ‘Work of Art,’ which has racked up a staggering 661.2M streams. Lauded by both fans and critics, the album continues to appear on the upper echelons of streaming charts, proving its enduring appeal. His debut, ‘Mr Money With The Vibe,‘ isn’t far behind, claiming the second spot with 634M streams, while his third album, ‘Lungu Boy‘, secures the sixth position with 387M streams.

This remarkable dominance underscores Asake’s emergence as an era-defining star, one whose music has reshaped Afrobeats’ soundscape while tipping the industry’s commercial balance in his favor. Spotify Nigeria’s recent data further validates this, naming him the most-streamed artist of all time on the platform since its Nigerian launch in 2021.

Asake first broke into the mainstream with his hit EP ‘Ololade Asake‘ in January 2022. With a vibrant blend of energetic rap flows and smooth Fuji-inflected melodies, alongside producer Magicsticks’ masterful use of log drums, he delivered hit singles that propelled him to superstar status.

With three albums in the top 10, Asake is clearly the king of Nigeria’s streaming era and one of the most defining figures in contemporary Nigerian pop music.

While Asake dominates with three entries in the top six, other Nigerian stars also make their mark. Burna Boy logs three albums, with two landing in the top 10: his 2022 hit-filled album ‘Love, Damini‘ at No. 4 (436.8M streams) and 2023’s ‘I Told Them’ at No. 9 (308M streams). His 2020 Grammy-winning album ‘Twice As Tall‘ rounds out his entries at No. 19 (235.3M streams).

Other multiple-entry artists include Davido, whose fourth album ‘Timeless‘ ranks fifth (428M streams), while his fifth album ‘5IVE‘ appears at No. 15 despite being released in 2025. Wizkid claims two spots with his sixth album ‘Morayo‘ at No. 10 (301.4M streams) and ‘Made In Lagos‘ at No. 13 (264.1M streams). Seyi Vibez also features twice: ‘Billion Dollar Baby‘ at No. 8 (331.1M streams) and ‘Thy Kingdom Come‘ at No. 17 (245M streams).

Speaking to Dazed during Milan Fashion Week, where he walked the runway for Diesel, the artist shared that he combines a bit of alcohol, cigarettes, prayer, and sound checks to prepare for his performances.

“A little Tequila, a little cigarette, pray, tap in with the team and make sure everything is on cue,” Rema explained, emphasizing that performing is far more demanding than walking a runway, with breath control and crowd energy being key.

On his current musical inspirations, he mentioned immersing himself in Sudanese cultural live music while candidly admitting that smoking remains his “biggest vice.” These insights offer fans a rare glimpse into the personal routines behind one of Afrobeats’ most dynamic performers.

When asked, “Would you rather have a girl with style or funds?” Rema responded without hesitation:
“I already got the funds, so style.”

The hitmaker explained that having achieved financial stability and independence at a young age, money is no longer a deciding factor for him when it comes to love. Instead, he values individuality, confidence, and a strong sense of personal style.

The list, compiled by Spotify’s editorial team of cross-disciplinary editors and curators, spans music from 2015 to today, ranking songs not purely by streams but by cultural impact, musicality, storytelling, and lasting influence. Three African hits cracked the top 100, proving the continent’s pop dominance.

Number 8: “One Dance” – Drake, Wizkid & Kyla

Securing a spot in the top ten is no small feat, and the 2016 Afrobeats-infused collaboration “One Dance” earned its place. Drake, who had already experimented with Afrobeats via an unofficial remix of Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba,” broke fully into global pop with this track.

Blending Afrobeats and dancehall rhythms, “One Dance” not only gave Drake his first Billboard Hot 100 number one as a lead artist but also became the first song in Spotify history to reach one billion streams. Beyond the numbers, it proved that Afrobeats could anchor mainstream pop without losing its authenticity, opening doors for countless artists afterward.

Number 29: “Calm Down” – Rema

Rema’s “Calm Down” had already been making waves before Selena Gomez jumped on the remix, but the collaboration elevated the track into a global phenomenon. The remix fused Rema’s playful energy with Gomez’s polished confidence, producing a song that transcended borders. “Calm Down” became the most successful Afrobeats single in Billboard history and the first African artist-led track to hit one billion streams on Spotify.

The track redefined what a global remix could achieve, amplifying rather than diluting the original sound.

Number 50: “Water” – Tyla

Tyla’s “Water” represents another landmark moment, introducing the South African genre Amapiano to a worldwide audience. Known for its log drum and hypnotic grooves, the track retained the genre’s distinctiveness while making waves globally.

The song won the inaugural Grammy for Best African Music Performance and made Tyla the first South African solo artist to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years. Its placement at number 50 signals that Amapiano has officially arrived on the international pop stage.

Spotify’s staff picks highlight that African artists are no longer novelties on global pop lists. Afrobeats and Amapiano now sit comfortably alongside the likes of Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and The Weeknd, demonstrating that Africa’s sounds are reshaping the very landscape of contemporary pop music.

Rema has etched his name even deeper into music history as Rave & Roses (Ultra) officially surpasses 3.2 billion streams on Spotify, making it the first African album ever to reach such a milestone on the platform.

The achievement highlights the album’s remarkable global reach and longevity. Powered by genre-blending records, chart-topping singles, and steady worldwide listener engagement, Rave & Roses (Ultra) has continued to rack up streams long after its release, proving its lasting appeal across different markets.

Beyond the numbers, the moment speaks to a broader shift. The project has consistently pushed boundaries and raised expectations for African music on the world stage, showing that albums from the continent can not only compete globally but also maintain dominance over time.

With this feat, Rema further cements his position as a generational star, while Rave & Roses (Ultra) stands as a landmark chapter in African pop history, a clear statement that African albums can endure, excel, and thrive at the very highest levels of global streaming.

Speaking during an interview with People Gallery, the 25-year-old singer revealed that personal style ranks higher for him than financial status in a relationship.

When asked, “Would you rather have a girl with style or funds?” Rema responded without hesitation:
“I already got the funds, so style.”

Rema’s candid response has since sparked conversations online, with many fans applauding his honesty and self-awareness. In contrast, others weighed in on what they believe truly defines attraction in modern relationships.

The surprise appearance quickly turned into a mini homecoming as residents poured into the streets to catch a glimpse of the global music star.

In several videos that later surfaced online, Rema was seen strolling through familiar corners of the area, exchanging warm greetings with old friends and neighbours who could hardly hide their excitement.

As word of his presence spread, the usually calm neighbourhood came alive with cheers and chants of “Divine, we love you!” echoing through the streets as fans celebrated the rare and emotional moment.

Beyond reconnecting with his roots, the singer also shared a quiet, personal moment with his family. Rema attended church alongside his mother, where his presence did not go unnoticed.

During the service, the presiding pastor took time to publicly acknowledge the artist and commend his mother for her role in shaping his journey.

Addressing her directly, the pastor praised her dedication and upbringing of the Afrobeats star, saying, “Thank you for being part of this church and for raising this young man.”

He also had kind words for Rema himself, adding, “You look handsome physically, more than in pictures. Thank you for being a part of this church. God bless you.”

The visit offered fans a rare glimpse into Rema’s personal side, reminding many of his humble beginnings and strong family ties.

For residents of the Benin City neighbourhood, it was more than just a celebrity sighting; it was a proud moment of seeing one of their own return home, even if just for a day.
