Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with manager Nuri Sahin after just over six months in charge, following a disappointing 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Sahin’s tenure saw the team struggle domestically and internationally, leaving them 10th in the Bundesliga and 13th in their Champions League group. They were also eliminated from the DFB Pokal in the second round.

Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken addressed the decision on the club’s website:

“We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much. We had hoped for a long-term collaboration and believed in achieving a turnaround together. However, after four consecutive defeats, only one win in the last nine games, and our current position in the table, we have unfortunately lost faith in achieving our sporting goals under this setup. This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”

When does the 2024/25 Champions League begin?

The dates for each fixture will not be confirmed until Saturday, but UEFA has revealed when each matchday will take place. Whereas the previous format saw the group stage wrapped up by Christmas, the new Swiss model will take the league phase to the end of January.

The sides who finished from ninth to 24th will compete in the knockout round playoffs in February for places in the last 16, where the clubs ranked from first to eighth will be waiting.
