Borussia Dortmund SACK Nuri Sahin after dismal Champions League loss to Bologna with ex-Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag a leading candidate to take over as head coach

Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with manager Nuri Sahin after just over six months in charge, following a disappointing 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Sahin’s tenure saw the team struggle domestically and internationally, leaving them 10th in the Bundesliga and 13th in their Champions League group. They were also eliminated from the DFB Pokal in the second round.
Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken addressed the decision on the club’s website:
“We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much. We had hoped for a long-term collaboration and believed in achieving a turnaround together. However, after four consecutive defeats, only one win in the last nine games, and our current position in the table, we have unfortunately lost faith in achieving our sporting goals under this setup. This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”
According to The Athletic, the team and staff were informed of the decision at the team hotel in Italy after the match. Sahin and his coaching staff departed separately, while the players returned to Germany.
Dortmund have already begun their search for a replacement, with former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reportedly high on their shortlist. Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg reports that the Dutchman is interested but will likely demand a long-term contract, contingent on the resolution of his severance terms with Manchester United.
Dortmund, now on a four-game losing streak since returning from the winter break, will look to bounce back in their Bundesliga clash against Werder Bremen on Saturday.
