Spotify is taking another step toward greater transparency in the age of artificial intelligence with a new system designed to identify music profiles built around AI-generated artist identities.

The streaming giant is introducing an AI Persona label that will allow users to recognise profiles that portray artificial or virtual performers rather than real human artists.
Importantly, the new system is not designed to determine whether an artist used artificial intelligence to make a particular song. Musicians who incorporate AI into their production or creative processes will not automatically receive the designation. Instead, Spotify’s focus is on the identity being presented to listeners.
The new indicator is expected to roll out from mid-September across different areas of Spotify’s mobile platform. Users could see it on artist profile pages, About sections, Search results and alongside tracks appearing in playlists.
Spotify is also changing how music from these profiles enters its recommendation system. Tracks associated with identified AI Personas will be kept out of personalised recommendations by default, allowing listeners to have more control over the kind of artists and music they encounter.
From August 11, artists will have the option to disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona. However, the platform will not depend entirely on voluntary submissions.
Spotify plans to combine human assessment with AI-powered investigative systems to identify profiles that may fall under the new category. When the company applies the label itself, affected artists will be notified and given the chance to accept the classification through disclosure or challenge it through an appeal.
The move comes at a time when AI-generated songs, virtual performers and digitally created artist identities are becoming increasingly visible across streaming services. Their rise has sparked wider conversations about authenticity, transparency and the need for listeners to understand who is actually behind the music they consume.
By separating the identity of an artist from the technology used to create their music, Spotify is drawing a clear line between AI-assisted creativity and entirely artificial performers.
As technology continues to reshape the music industry and make the distinction between human and virtual artists less obvious, the new system gives listeners another layer of information when discovering music on the platform.
