Skepta announces the release date for his first directorial debut.
Nigerian-British rapper Skepta revealed the premiere date for his inaugural directorial venture. The film, titled “Tribal Mark,” is scheduled to debut on January 26 at Everyman Cinema.
Produced by Skepta’s production company, 1PLUS1, in collaboration with Dwight Okechukwu, the movie unfolds the poignant journey of a Nigerian immigrant adapting to life in a foreign land.
The narrative also explores the intricacies of an undercover black secret service. The cast boasts a diverse assembly of emerging black actors, with Jude Carmichael assuming the role of the film’s protagonist, Young Mark.
Beyond his directorial debut, Skepta has announced his return to the music scene with the release of his first single, ‘Gas Me Up,’ slated to drop on the same day as the ‘Tribal Mark‘ movie. This single is part of his upcoming studio album, ‘Knife and Fork.’ However, prior to the album launch, controversy arose surrounding the artwork for the single ‘Gas Me Up (Diligent),’ prompting Skepta to issue an apology and remove the contentious imagery.
The artwork featured a gathering of bald-headed men, with one bearing the phrase “Gas Me Up” tattooed on his head. Swiftly, concerns were raised linking the image to the tragic deaths of Jewish people in Nazi gas chambers during World War Two. Skepta promptly acknowledged the potential for offense caused by the association and took steps to address the situation.
