‘No One Helped Me, Only My Fans and God’s Grace’
Nigerian singer and rapper Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, popularly known as Skales, recently rebuked a social media critic who credited Burna Boy with reviving his career.
The debate kicked off when a user labelled Skales’ career as “dead,” suggesting that its revival was due to Burna Boy’s involvement in the 2017 remix of Skales’ hit track, Temper. The remix, which featured Burna Boy, gained notable attention and was nominated for Best Collaboration at the 2018 Headies Awards.
The critic’s comment read, “This is the more reason why everyone hates you mf. Burnaboy was part of the people that helped your dead career,” Skales quickly countered this claim, stating that while he respects Burna Boy, his success was self-made and driven by his fans and faith, not by Burna Boy or any other individual.
Taking to the social media platform X, Skales clarified: “I’ll defend myself always. I love Burna but don’t ever say he helped me. No one helped me! Only my fans and God’s grace. The collab was mutually beneficial; if it wasn’t, we wouldn’t still perform it separately.”
Listen I will defend myself always … I love Burna but don’t you ever say he helped me … no one helped me! Only my fans and God’s grace .. we do collabo wey all of us benefit from .. if the thing no benefit us we no go Dey perform for our different sets … pic.twitter.com/pbaSF2UMvA

This incident follows another recent dispute where Skales denied that Wizkid played a pivotal role in his success. Instead, he credited other artists who genuinely supported his journey.

Skales, who began writing rap songs in 2000, has collaborated with notable artists such as Akon, Banky W, and Falz. Last year, he also spoke about his struggles after leaving Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), the label run by Banky W, as he worked to establish himself independently in the Nigerian music industry.
