Renowned songstress Simi found herself embroiled in controversy following criticism from a music critic regarding her perceived repetitive musical style and the purported need for a change in sound.

Taking to her X account on March 14, 2024, the acclaimed artist addressed the issue head-on, staunchly defending her artistic choices.

The backlash stemmed from Simi’s latest single, “All I Want,” which some fans criticized as repetitive, calling for a departure from her familiar cheerful singing and light-hearted lyrics. In response to the criticism, Simi expressed her frustration on X, firmly stating her refusal to alter her sound to please detractors.

Rejecting claims of repetitiveness in her music, Simi highlighted the diversity in her last 10 singles, showcasing her versatility as an artist. She urged fans who do not appreciate her music to explore other artists they prefer, asserting, “If you don’t like my song, please go and listen to your faves.”

Simi’s impassioned response also addressed the issue of feedback urging her to change her sound, which she characterized as “uninspired” and “tired.” She reiterated her passion for creating music and voiced frustration at the expectation for her to conform to others’ preferences.

She wrote, “I did not force anybody oh Small one that I’ve said now, they’ll say “not everybody will like you” but me I know. Me sef I no like everybody. But I’m not gonna lie – uninspired, unbacked, tired feedback like “switch up your sound” irritate the fuck out of me. Meanwhile the last fucking song you’ve heard from me is Joromi.”

Simi asserted her freedom to artistic expression by drawing comparisons to Adele’s constant style and questioning why her own musical choices were scrutinized so much. She stressed that she makes music out of passion and asked critics to respect her artistry, while also acknowledging that not everyone would find her work particularly appealing.

She continued, “Then you wait for your idolo on twitter to start a thread about how my verses are fire (on someone else’s song) before you respect me. I’m not dragging best with anybody. I make music because I fucking love it.”

“Na the same ballad Adele dey sing all these days, her people no disturb am. E fi mi sile. If you don’t like what I’m selling, go and listen to the one you like. Unless you don’t have data. And if you don’t have, owo e lo wa ku si,” she added.

Fans and industry analysts have been discussing Simi’s open comments on X. While some believe she should not have responded to her fans in that way, others have praised her for maintaining her ground and preserving her musical identity.

Omo because I'm doing girl next door, some of you think maybe I'm ok like that. If you don't like my song, please go and listen to your faves. I'm begging. If it's the features you want to allow yourself acknowledge my talent, hear that one and be going.

And please nothing like "don't let them bring you down". Worstest. They can't bring Simisola down. They can only say they don't like my cloth…and some days me too I don't like my cloth. However sometimes if someone says "Are you mad?" You have to say "it's your daddy that is…
