Nigerian musician Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeats icon Fela Kuti, has ignited widespread reactions following controversial remarks comparing African historical figures to Jesus Christ.

In a video making rounds online, Seun praised the bravery and resilience of African heroes who stood against oppression and injustice.
He argued that the sacrifices made by figures like Patrice Lumumba, Thomas Sankara, and his father hold deeper meaning, as they faced death without any expectation of resurrection.
According to him, these individuals knowingly gave their lives for their people, fully aware that their deaths would be final. He contrasted this with the Christian belief surrounding Jesus, suggesting that the certainty of resurrection changes the nature of that sacrifice.
“The sacrifice of Lumumba is greater to me than the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ knew he was going to wake up after three days, but the people that died for me; Lumumba, Sankara, my father, Nkrumah, Steve Biko, these people died knowing they would never wake up, and they still died. They’ve dehumanized us for so long they believe we are all animals. We need to prove to them that we are humans. From today, no matter what they come with, stand your ground!,” he stated.
His comments have since sparked intense debate online, with many weighing in on his views about religion, history, and the legacy of African resistance figures such as Kwame Nkrumah and Steve Biko.
