Afrobeat musician and activist Seun Kuti has given fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of his highly anticipated album, ‘Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head)’, through a new video on his YouTube channel.
The video, filmed and directed by Raphaël Frydman at Question de Son studio in Paris, captures the creative process and artistry behind Seun’s latest work.
Set to release on October 4th via the Milan-based independent label Record Kicks, ‘Heavier Yet’ comes six years after Seun’s Grammy-nominated album, ‘Black Times‘. This new record signifies a major milestone in his career, reflecting his growth both as an artist and activist.
In the video, Seun Kuti emphasizes the core message of his music, dispelling misconceptions that it is simply an extension of his father, Fela Kuti’s, legacy. He points out, “African liberation is not my father’s message, but Africa’s message,” referencing the harsh reality that over 90% of Africans live in poverty, with 65% surviving on less than $2 a day. His music calls for unity and empowerment, rallying for change and liberation.
The album is produced by an impressive team, with Lenny Kravitz serving as executive producer and Fela Kuti and Egypt 80’s original producer, Sodi Marciszewer, acting as artistic producer.
This collaboration has allowed Seun to explore new musical dimensions, blending Afrobeat with elements of funk and reggae. Seun expressed his gratitude for working with Kravitz, describing the experience as “magical” and noting how it shaped his future musical direction.
‘Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head)’ will be available on all major streaming platforms, as well as in CD and limited edition vinyl formats.
The album promises to inspire listeners, blending entertainment with activism, and continuing Seun Kuti’s powerful message of African unity and liberation.
Seun leaves viewers with a profound thought in the Making Of video: “Monkeys need trees, lions need wilder beasts, crocodiles need a laguna, sharks need water, human beings need beauty, we need it.” As fans await the album’s release, the video offers a glimpse of the powerful art set to drop on October 4th.
