American singer and actress Selena Gomez has shared that her personal health challenges make it unsafe for her to carry her own children. Gomez, who has been dealing with lupus since 2013—a condition where the immune system attacks the body’s tissues and organs—discussed her situation in an interview with Vanity Fair.
She revealed, “I haven’t ever said this before, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have multiple medical issues that would endanger both my life and the baby’s. It was something I had to come to terms with and grieve over for a while.”
Gomez reflected on how her health issues changed her expectations about starting a family and how this new reality impacted her vision. However, she has found peace with the situation.
“It’s not exactly how I envisioned it. I thought it would happen like it does for everyone else. But I’m in a much better place now. I’m grateful for the options of surrogacy and adoption, which are both significant possibilities for me,” she said.
She remains hopeful about her future, noting that while her path to motherhood may differ from her initial plans, she is excited about the journey.
“I’m looking forward to how it will unfold, even if it’s different from what I imagined. Ultimately, it will be my journey and my baby,” she explained.
Gomez also mentioned her past experience with dating, saying, “Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, except for a few dates. I realized that, if this is the situation, family is the most important thing to me.”
