Reflecting the evolving landscape of Afrobeats on the global stage, the Billboard Music Awards introduced specific categories to honor this genre’s impact.
Among them were ‘Top Afrobeat Song‘ and ‘Top Afrobeat Artist,’ both claimed by Rema and Burna Boy at the ceremony presented by Marriott Bonvoy on Sunday, November 19, 2023. Burna Boy earned the accolade for ‘Top Afrobeat Artist,’ while Rema and Selena Gomez took home the award for ‘Top Afrobeat Song‘ with their collaboration, ‘Calm Down.’

In a memorable moment during Selena Gomez’s acceptance speech for ‘Calm Down,’ the singer graciously acknowledged Rema, stating, “Thank you guys so, so much for this award.
