Mohamed Salah ‘totally devastated’ as Liverpool miss out on Champions League
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah feels that when their exclusion from the Champions League was announced, the Reds “let fans down.”
Liverpool’s poor first three-quarters of the season left them with too much work to do to return to the top four, and their recent run of seven victories and a draw in eight games was insufficient to narrow the gap.
Newcastle United qualified for the most prestigious club championship in European football over the weekend, while Manchester United earned the last slot in the top four on Thursday with a convincing 4-1 win over Chelsea.
Next season, Liverpool will have to make do with Europa League play, which, in Salah’s opinion, is insufficient for the Reds.
“I’m totally devastated,” Salah wrote on Twitter after United’s victory. “There’s absolutely no excuse for this.
“We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed. We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down.”
