I need to work a hundred times harder than my male counterparts – Qing Madi

Rising Nigerian music star Qing Madi has been honored as Spotify’s EQUAL Africa Artist for January 2025, marking yet another significant milestone in her burgeoning career.
This recognition is not her first encounter with Spotify’s EQUAL program, as she previously graced the EQUAL playlist. The platform’s 2024 Wrapped data ranked Qing Madi among Nigeria’s most-streamed female artists, thanks to her hit single *American Love*.
Starting her music journey at the tender age of five, Qing Madi has consistently pushed creative boundaries, earning a reputation for the depth and versatility of her artistry. Her big break came when ‘See Finish’ went viral on social media, propelling her into the spotlight and cementing her place in the Nigerian music industry.

Building on her success, she released the “Qing Madi” album, a compilation of songs that explore relatable themes like first love and the journey to self-discovery. A deluxe version of the album followed, featuring collaborations with American singer Chloe Bailey and Afrobeats star Kizz Daniel.
Reflecting on her inspiration, Qing Madi shared her deep passion for making an impact through her music. “I realised music was my calling as young as when I was five years old. My WHY for pursuing music is rooted in a deep desire to impact the world positively and touch lives through my art. Music is my way of inspiring, uplifting, and connecting with people on a profound level,” she explained.
Qing Madi credits American rapper Kendrick Lamar as a major influence in her formative years. “I grew up listening to the lyrical genius of Kendrick Lamar, whose artistry and storytelling influenced my creative journey and the way I approach music,” she revealed.
Describing her unique sound, Qing Madi said, “My music is a fusion of Afro-Soul, Afro-R&B, and Afro-Pop—a rich, alternative African sound. It is deeply soulful and resonates with emotions, creating a connection that speaks to the heart and mind.”

Navigating the male-dominated music industry, the rising star acknowledges the challenges but sees them as opportunities to showcase her talent. “As a female artist, I’ve learned that you need to work a hundred times harder than your male counterparts to have your voice heard. My unique perspective is reflected in my artistry—I think differently, and I see the world in a way that shapes my writing and music. My lyrics often incorporate metaphors and layered meanings, allowing listeners to explore deeper emotions and perspectives through my songs,” she explained.
As Qing Madi gears up for the release of her debut LP, *The Blueprint*, later this month, fans and industry watchers alike are eager to witness her continued ascent as one of Nigeria’s most exciting musical talents.
