Nigerian singer Portable has shared his thoughts on the outcome of the recent Grammy Awards, offering his perspective on Nigeria’s loss to South African singer Tyla.

In response to Nigeria’s setback at the Grammy Awards, Portable took to his Instagram page on Monday, February 6, 2024, to share his views, encouraging Nigerians to embrace and champion their indigenous music genre, Afrobeat.

The outspoken singer stressed the importance of recognizing Afrobeat, emphasizing that it’s vital for Nigerians to rally behind and promote the genre if they hope to continue achieving international recognition.

During his commentary, Portable underscored the significance of preserving Afrobeat amidst the growing popularity of other music styles like Amapiano. He argued that while Amapiano has gained momentum, it’s crucial for Nigerians to uphold their own musical heritage.

Furthermore, Portable highlighted the origins of popular dance moves like “shaku shaku” and emphasized that the Amapiano sound originates from South Africa. He cautioned against solely pursuing Amapiano in the pursuit of Grammy accolades, suggesting that it may not necessarily lead to success for Nigerian artists.

Portable’s insights shed light on the importance of celebrating and advocating for Afrobeat as a fundamental aspect of Nigeria’s musical legacy, urging for a renewed focus on the genre to maintain Nigeria’s prominence on the global music scene.
