Marcus Rashford has acknowledged that it was ‘not nice’ to witness Manchester City complete a historic treble last Saturday.
With their close 1-0 victory over Inter in the UEFA Champions League final, Man City became just the second team in English football history to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and Europe’s top cup competition all in the same year. Manchester United was the only other club to accomplish this feat back in 1999.
In the FA Cup final at the end of May, the Red Devils had a chance to prevent Man City from completing the treble, but they were unable to do so since Ilkay Gundogan’s two goals clinched the second of the three trophies they would eventually win in 2022–23.
Rashford discussed Man City’s triple with the media prior to his international duty with England.
“It’s not nice. But it’s football. They best team who consistently play the best football are going to win the most trophies. They’ve won three so well done to them. We just move on and it’s up to them to keep it up. It’s up to us to catch them up,” he said.
“I’ll say congratulations. It’s football. It’s nothing new. Just look at Barcelona, Real Madrid a few years ago – they were consistently the best team so will win trophies.”
Rashford and Manchester United will be trying to reduce the gap with Man City next season, with the Red Devils finishing two places and 14 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side in 2022/23.
Last season, however, was a big improvement on previous seasons for Manchester United – the club won their first trophy since 2017 – and there is hope that with the proper signings, they can fight for the league title.
Man United are reportedly interested in signing Kim Min-Jae, Mason Mount, and two strikers this summer, according to report.
