Manchester United has had its worst defensive start to a season in 60 years, following their 3-3 draw against Galatasaray on Wednesday. Despite holding a 3-1 lead, United conceded, putting their Champions League campaign in jeopardy with one game remaining in the group stage.

The Red Devils have now conceded a total of 33 goals in all competitions this season, establishing their poorest defensive record after 20 matches since the 1962-63 season when they let in 43 goals, according to Opta. This defensive struggle represents a significant challenge for Manchester United as they navigate their current campaign.

Conceding three goals in such a crucial game intensifies the pressure on goalkeeper Andre Onana and coach Erik ten Hag. The Cameroon international, Onana, faced criticism for his performance, particularly on Hakim Ziyech’s second free-kick. Although Onana managed to get a hand to the ball, he failed to keep it out, allowing Galatasaray to make it 3-2 and ultimately secure a vital point.

Ten Hag’s team has struggled in the Champions League, securing just four points from their five matches. To progress, they now must beat Bayern Munich in their final game and rely on Galatasaray failing to beat Copenhagen in the group’s other match. Additionally, Manchester United’s Premier League campaign has been challenging, currently sitting sixth in the table and conceding 16 goals in 13 games.

The Red Devils aim to bounce back and secure a third consecutive Premier League victory on Saturday when they face Newcastle at St James’ Park. Newcastle, coming off a notable 4-1 win against Chelsea last week, are currently seventh in the table, trailing United by just one point. The upcoming match is crucial for both teams as they seek to strengthen their positions in the league.
