Luis Rubiales’ mother goes on hunger strike until Jenni Hermoso ‘tells the truth’
Luis Rubiales‘ mother, Angeles Bejar, has gone on a hunger strike and begged Jenni Hermoso to “tell the truth” in a statement.
Following his conduct at the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, Rubiales generated unwanted headlines and found himself in the midst of a political and sporting maelstrom.
Rubiales grabbed the winning players after the match, which saw Spain defeat England 1-0, and kissed Barcelona attacker Hermoso on the lips.
Despite rising calls for him to resign, he has refused to do so despite receiving plenty of criticism following an eventful medal ceremony in Sydney.
Several leading stars in Spain have vowed not to represent their national team again until Rubiales is removed from power – with FIFA having stepped in to suspend him from all football-related activity.
Bejar is devastated that her son is now the focus of a “cruel” story.
Hermoso was asked to “tell the truth” and “maintain the version she had at the beginning of events” after initially brushing off the encounter. She has reiterated Rubiales’ claims that there was “consent on both sides” regarding a now-famous kiss.
Bejar has since moved her protest to the Divina Pastora de Motril church, where she made a promise to EFE that she would continue her hunger strike “indefinitely, day and night” until what she considered to be justice was served.
She has said that “what they are doing with my son is something that he does not deserve”.
Bejar reveals that Rubiales is “incapable of harming anyone” and is hoping to see his name cleared in an unfortunate saga.
