The Headies 2019 wasn’t that interesting, is what a lot of people are saying. The ratings aren’t really high, yeah. But one eventful thing that happened that night was Teni. She swept all of the awards!
Now, we are in a country where people believe female talents are not given the recognition they deserve, especially in the music industry. And although we’ve had a few female artists who have rocked the scene in the past (Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Niniola), there’s still this feeling that the men keep dominating. Especially when it comes to Awards.
Every year, you hear that a particular guy got multiple Headies, but really, when was the last time you heard that a female artist did the same? So, what? Is it that there are no girls going ten times harder than everyone else in the game? Who knows, really. It could be anything.
But one thing is sure, now. What no one has done before, Teni did it. And for that, we are at least thankful that the Headies 2019 happened. But all those awards what does it really mean about Teni’s status and career? Hmmm, a lot would be my first guess, you know.
Teniola (who is Niniola‘s kid sister, by the way) emerged on the scene in 2017, with the Mystro-produced highlife hit, “Fargin” which was a sleeper. Since then people started watching her. She showed all the signs of a promising star, and after her stellar performance in 2018, she went on to win Next Rated, one of the few females to have ever done that, beating Peruzzi to it.
And that, as you know, wasn’t he end of the road for her, like many others in the past. In fact, it was the beginning. She came into this year, all hyped up and she kept throwing us hits, while also getting featured on some bang tracks. Her Instagram moments also lit us up a bit, make we no lie. But her performance has been impressive, and as a matter of fact, no other female is doing anything close to what Teni is single-handedly pushing.
Then, a couple of weeks ago, she unleashed her debut project, “Billionaire”, a 6-track EP, full of tracks that bang. From it, she had pre-released “Billionaire”, and it’s already one of the hottest songs this month. She’s steady killing it if you will. And doesn’t seem like she will be stopping any time soon.
So, what? She won how many awards? Three? Five? Who cares if it’s ten, just give it all to her and join me to scream “Girl Power!!!”
