Don Jazzy recalls, “I went with my mother to sell akara in the hopes that big men would give me money.”
According to Nigerian music mogul Don Jazzy, his inspiration comes from the time he spent in Ajegunle with his mother selling akara in the hopes that the “big men” would take notice and assist him.
The music producer expressed his views as a guest on the Zero Conditions podcast, saying that he doesn’t think most individuals who claim to have suffered actually did.
He claimed that selling akara with his mother as a youngster had moulded him, particularly because he had a history of asking for money and attention through prayer.
Recalling his humble beginnings, he said, “I remember it like it was yesterday… I remember sitting down with my mum frying akara there, sitting on the bench there in Ajegunle, and any big man that passes by with their Peugeot 504 or Mercedes 230 or whatever and they come to buy akara. I also remember the thought in my head, ‘I wish this man would just look at me and go Young boy just take this, I know that you need it’ or something like that.”
Don Jazzy continued by saying that now that he had achieved success, it was impossible for him to meet someone without offering some sort of assistance or giving back to the community.
According to the music mogul, he sees himself in any person he meets that is struggling and is moved to help in any way. “I have a problem with people meeting me and not getting impacted,” he said.
